NASA is harnessing the incredible potential of innovators, makers and citizen scientists by opening up the search. In an increasingly connected world, NASA recognizes the value of the public as a partner in addressing some of the country’s most pressing challenges. We need your help in identifying asteroids – and to help further this effort, we’ve built an application that enables everyone, everywhere, to help solve this global challenge.My only question is whether Planetary Resources will share some of its mining wealth with those who detect the most profitable asteroid. I think I already know the answer to that one.

We Are Not Alone...
If you look at the traffic in space, you can see the "space race" is turning into rush hour: Here are a few examples:
- Europe: The Rosetta mission was a great accomplishment. Landing a probe on a comet is no small task, and the European Space Agency (ESA) should be elated with this accomplishment. ESA is also working with Russia on a new mission to Mars, something that the U.S. backed out of earlier. Hence, alliances are forming with the U.S. being sidelined.
- China: China continues to work on its plans for a space station and took further steps last year in its efforts to return samples from the moon. China already has a rover on the Moon's surface.
- Japan: Japan launched the Hayabusa 2 mission last month (pictured above) heading for a 3,000-foot-wide asteroid named 1999 JU3. NASA and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plan to share asteroid samples.
- Russia: The Russians continue to build most of the rockets we depend upon, have discussed pulling out of the International Space Station so they can build their own station, and recently restated plans to put cosmonauts on the Moon. Whether or not Russia will have the budget to do these things in coming years will depend upon economics as much as science and technology given the state of the Russian economy.
- India: India joined the big leagues last year with its successful Mars Orbiter Mission, which put a spacecraft in orbit around the Red Planet. India is also taking steps to build a new rocket and capsule for future manned missions.

India is also taking steps to build a new rocket and capsule for future manned missions.- Private Sector: In addition to the various national missions, the private sector has its own plans, including Planetary Resources mining asteroid, Mars One bringing humans to Mars, SpaceX hopefully allowing the U.S. to move away from Russian rockets, and Bigelow designing inflatable space stations (see photo) for both science and tourism.
All of the activity is encouraging, and maybe it will give the NASA and the Congress a swift kick in the pants, letting them know that the world will not stand idle while Rome (or budgets) burn and committees fiddle. Competition helped us get to the Moon, and it may do so again.

NASA News: NEOWISE Spots Hazards & Mining Possibilities
A recent NASA story notes that the NEOWISE project, an unplanned extension of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), has found more potentially hazardous asteroids than initially estimated by scientists (also called PHAs by those government types who can find a acronym for anything - AFA). These PHAs can most likely make it through our atmosphere and do some serious damage below. NASA findings indicate there are about 4,700 PHAs with diameters larger than 330 feet. And where did they come from? Most likely collisions in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
This could be good news for those who plan to mine the asteroids, such as Planetary Resources. The company has a simple mission:
Planetary Resources’ mission is clear: apply commercial, innovative techniques to explore space. We will develop low-cost robotic spacecraft to explore the thousands of resource-rich asteroids within our reach. We will learn everything we can about them, then develop the most efficient capabilities to deliver these resources directly to both space-based and terrestrial customers. Asteroid mining may sound like fiction, but it’s just science.
Whether or not we need to go so far for such resources is another question. Of course, this is something the private sector can decide. As Slate noted:
This space-mining venture is either going to be a spectacular success or a spectacular failure. Either way, the emphasis will be on spectacular. And the best part of all is that U.S. taxpayers won’t bear the risk if these extraordinary plans fail to pan out.
